About this Tutorial

This half-day tutorial explores the applications of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Generative AI in language learning and assessment. Led by experts with multi-disciplinary backgrounds, the session will take place at AIED 2025 and aligns with the conference theme of using AI to create inclusive, personalized, and ethical education.

The tutorial is structured into five main sections:

  1. Introduction to Educational NLP
  2. NLP applications in teaching and learning including tutoring systems and automatic item generation
  3. Assessment technologies such as grammatical error correction and automated writing evaluation
  4. Ethical considerations in educational AI
  5. Future directions in the field

A special emphasis will be placed on how Large Language Models (LLMs) are transforming language education through personalized learning experiences and innovative assessment approaches.

Participants from diverse backgrounds—including AI researchers, educators, EdTech professionals, and graduate students—will gain practical insights into implementing NLP technologies in educational contexts. Through discussions, case studies, and demonstrations, attendees will learn how to leverage cutting-edge AI techniques to enhance learning experiences, create more equitable assessment systems, and address real-world challenges in language education.
